How to put an end to world hunger? Honest question!

Can someone explain this to me: when people say we only need 6 billion euros to end world hunger, what exactly do they mean by that? Do they mean that this amount of money is enough to provide food for everyone on earth forever? Is it enough to buy, transport, prepare and distribute all that food every day for as long as humanity exists? Or do they mean 6 billion euros is enough to set up livelihoods for everyone everywhere? Or maybe it's enough to plant and keep growing crops, as well as to farm livestock everywhere regardless of climatic conditions?

What exactly does "ending the world hunger" mean and is 6 billion euros really enough to do that?

Phonetically consistent English

... sounds like a mix of some outdated, or even Old, English and the Chinese accent. It would be fun to speak it with my daughter, like another secret language of sorts haha))

News snippets

An Austrian politician made improper suggestions in his tweet regarding the German Secretary of State.

How stupid must a public figure be to make such comments on social media. 🤦

Russia sent its special agents to investigate the killing of Zakharchenko, the head of self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. Link

First of all, can you actually send your special.agents. to a foreign country to investigate whatever without being asked to, and be open about it? Was the man at least a Russian citizen? Just curious; it's such a mess over there.

To learn or not to learn

There's been a discussion going on about whether people should continue trying to master English, or if parents should insist on their kids learning it. (Here is what I'm talking about. It's in Russian). Those arguing against it reason that in 20 years the artificial intelligence is going to advance greatly, and automatic translations will render useless the ability to speak a foreign language, English in particular.

Their opponents, with whom I side, point out that speaking or even understanding a foreign language goes beyond such utilitarian necessities as being able to converse with people from other countries. A lot had been said and written on how knowing more than one language makes a person intellectually and culturally multi-dimensional, allowing one to develop a new, often improved, mindset and personality. I fail to see how any acquired knowledge can become a disadvantage. Quoting Frank Smith once again (although I still don't know who he was), "One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way." English is but a key to all those doors languages one can learn after it.

Consequently, the argument about how speaking English doesn't provide any leverage in a non-English-speaking country doesn't convince me either. There are hundreds of languages spoken in the world; even if we limit our choice to a couple of dozen of them, I doubt one can easily choose which language one wishes to learn early enough. Moreover, when one already knows English, one can at any time move forward and learn the next language easier and faster.

I wish everyone a nice weekend!

First post

I'm not really sure where to start so I'm just going to write whatever.

I've just had a conversation on Skype with my one and only speaking partner, the warmhearted and brilliant Tanya September. We went through a BBC Future article on why people are so incredibly gullible, fishing for amusing words and expressions worth learning. The highlight of our discussion turned out to be this video clip. Can you guess which word it illustrates?
